Violet Colbourne Nabi talked with the Sextons, her neighbours, and wrote this story (and took the pictures, too):

“Reg and Phyllis Sexton are well known for their devotion to their pets. Many neighbors and friends get them to care for pets when they go on vacations. This is often the case with Mike Sexton who has a small farm next door.

Reg often gathers up scraps from neighbors for Mike`s animals such as vegetable peelings for the sheep, bread for the chickens as well as leftovers for his dog and cat. They are never wasteful but  always frugal.

When Reg cleans the town hall of Goose Cove after functions, he and his wife Phyllis save all leftover food for the animals in the community.

Phyllis and Reg have also pets of their own: a dog named Pep, the cat Jingles, a rabbit called Hunny Bunny and four turtles, about which he always jokingly says: ” They are Speedy 1, 2, 3 and 4.”

If Reg visits or meets someone, you can be sure Reg has a candy for the person and a treat for any pet in his pocket. He also feeds the birds around his house where he has dozens of bird houses that he keeps filled with bird feed year round.
Over the years the Sextons have always had pets, too many to name them all, from the 30-year-old turtle (which they still have!)  to gold fish, budgie birds, rabbits,
many cats and dogs.

They have dearly loved each and every one of them. All of their pets get along amazingly well. They have been raised together for years.
The Sextons both spoil their pets. Reg loves to take the dog and cat outside with him when he works in the yard or goes on walks.

He tells me that he digs worms for the turtles in the summer, feeds them turtle food as well as Maple Leaf flaked ham, as they do not like President’s Choice.
As their nextdoor neighbour, I can vouch for how much he spoils any pets. My cat  Molly May “talked” to him when he was outside in the yard.  When she heard him close his door, she would run to the porch and wait for him. She was always looking forward to his visits.

Reg spoiled every cat or dog that I have fostered so far for the group Help the Strays St. Anthony and Area.  Including the present one, a dog named Lucky who cries to get out when he hears Reg going outside.”
